THE ARTIST

Egon Karl Nicolaus was born on the 30th of March 1928 in Hamburg, where he started an apprenticeship as a decorator in 1946, before he studied painting at Max Hermann's Malakademie (painting academy) until 1948. In 1949, still based in Hamburg, he continued to study painting under professor Arnold Fiedler at the academy of arts, Kunsthochschule am Lerchenfeld. From 1950 to 1951, Nicolaus moved to Stuttgart, where he became a student of Professor Willi Baumeister, followed by several study trips to Italy (Rome, Naples, Ischia).
The following years, Nicolaus was based in Hamburg again with his own studio . During this period, his work was strongly influenced by Constructivism. In 1956, he moved to the colony of artists in Worpswede, but soon after in 1957, he moved to Paris, where he became involved with Informalism and Tachism. In 1964, Arabic numerals slowly but distinctly began to appear in his informal works. In the same year, he moved again, this time from Paris to Cologne, but still keeping his Parisian studio. From that moment on, the artist permanently travelled between both cities. In the 1970s, among others, he also travelled several times to the USA (New York, Los Angeles). The Arabic number now clearly dominated his oeuvre and from this moment onwards always would. His work became more constructivist again, as before, in the 1980s, it had regained a more gestural execution with a looser brushstroke. Nicolaus died on the 23 September 1988 in Cologne.
